GHOST ORCS (Orc Dungeon Preview Snippet)

Back in January, NBateman of Press the Beast  raised a challenge to the server: The Orc Dungeon, a return to PURITY and STRENGTH in dungeon design. A dungeon where the only enemy is orcs, the only traps are spike traps and the only treasure is gold.  The full post is forthcoming; this draft preview is my attempt on ghosts following the Goblinpunch tradition. GHOST ORCS The Valley of the Dead was sacrosanct—an escape from a life of hardship and strife, where the dead could finally rest beyond the world of blood. And yet now rings with the shout of war, the thunder of hooves, and the stench of unclean death. Every moment of this indignity drives more of the dead to wakefulness.  The Dead cannot be harmed or slain by the living, only escaped, appeased, or momentarily repelled. They move at the speed of a walking man, and are easily outpaced on open ground—but they can move through stone and over pits with ease, and escaping them may require a dangerous pace in this trap-str...

COLLECTOR: OLD SCRIMSHAW

Image
COLLECTOR: OLD SCRIMSHAW The heavy, ornate doors close behind you, and the ruckus of the tavern below at once grows distant. Her Serene Tidings was once the pride of a royal armada. Today, like the crown she served, she’s broken. Since your grandfather’s youth, she’s lain, scuttled, in the harbor, her listing decks and berths now hosting city’s most infamous and beloved alehouse.  Yet here, for the first time, you can see the ghosts of her past glory--in the faded frescos above, the peeling gilt along the mantle. It makes the ghoulish collection around you all the more macabre. Shrunken heads leer down, hanging from the rafters like strings of garlic. The floor is a collage of exotic pelts of every size, and every flat surface of the grand cabin is occupied with some manner of trophy—eyes and organs floating in jars, wizened hands pinned to boards, and—overwhelmingly—everywhere, bones. Jawbones, ivory, teeth, skulls; all shapes and sizes. Carved into them, you see intricate...

20 Magic Swords

Last month in the GLOG discord, we had a community drive to write up 100 magic swords. I got pretty into it! Some are items lifted from old campaigns, some were written for adventures yet to be run, and many are brand-new. I've prettied them up and added two that didn't make the cut to make a round 20, in case you needed to roll a D20 for a magic sword.        1.  Bellringer, a massive +3 silvered adamant greatsword . Appears unimpressive, with a uniform patina of dull tarnished silver--until it is lifted in battle, where the tarnish clears like clouds to reveal a blazing silver light. As holy avenger , but includes tyrants and slavers in its portfolio of favored foes, alongside fiends and undead. Sheds bright light as torch. Severs chains and other implements of bondage without resistance, strikes with the sound of a great pealing bell.      Forged on commission for a famous republican paladin, whose severed oath-finger w...
